Been a long time since we’ve posted a blog. We are here to change that.
We’re excited here at 01.
We just landed a new client.
Our phone rang a few weeks ago and it was a Los Angeles number that we didn’t recognize. Normally we just let those calls go to voicemail, but this one sort of felt different. We picked up the phone and a nice sounding gentleman named Spencer introduced himself and explained that he was having a really hard time finding a marketing and SEO company in Los Angeles that could produce results and didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
After talking for nearly an hour, we decided this sounded like a match.
Karthik Barnabas is a former club promoter and he has done a boatload of video work before joining us here at 01. He was giddy like a little kid when we told him we were going to move forward on this project.
How Did You Find Us? SEO of course 😉
We always like to ask our new clients the question: How did you find us ?
He told us he started looking around for SEO companies in major cities and he found us through a recommendation off of Facebook.
We have changed our process and really tried to listen to our clients and really learn about their business as much as we can. Needless to say, Karthik was super excited to be on the initial discovery phone call.
About Our Client
Our client is a video production company in Los Angeles. As you can imagine, we were a bit intimated in some ways to take on this client given that we would be competing with the likes of Miramax, CBS, FOX etc. No big deal right ? HA! We were very upfront with the client and let them know that we have outranked Amazon in the past, but it will take a bit of time and it would take a bulletproof strategy to knock off the heavy hitters in this space, especially given that Los Angeles is the hot bed for production companies, music video production and production companies in general.
Our Initial Approach.
We had multiple planning meetings and decided that we would use our tried and true local business ranking system.
1) The on page SEO of this site needed massive amounts of work. Things like the title tags being too long, broken links all over the place and oversaturated keyword pages.
The company name is Sprinity Productions. In the name itself is a keyword “productions”. So, in the course of looking at the site we noticed there was a whopping 84 mentions of the word “productions”. Needless to say this was one of the major reasons why the site was stuck on page 4 for terms like “video production” “music video production” and “film production”.
2) Keyword cannibalization. The former SEO agency tried to pack all the keywords. ALL OF THEM on every page.
We have seen this before and its a mess to untangle this type of thing. What we had to do, was break out the big monster pages into a traditional SEO silo.
What this does is makes it easier for Google to understand what your site is about and it also makes it a hell of a lot easier for the user to navigate through your site.
So instead of one monster page that had video production, production and music video production all on the same page, we broke them down into individual landing pages. We also moved the projects into a blog page that updates on the home pages as well. Check it out here to see how we did this.
3) Finally, we went in and re-sized most of the images. The bane of inheriting a site from an Ad Agency is they tend to upload print quality sized images to the website.
For example, one of the images we saw was nearly 5000 pixels wide and made the site speed checking sites like Pingdom, GT Metrix and Google Site Speed nearly choke.
We resized them using Photoshop and then also used our favorite WordPress plugin SmushIt. to ensure if the client decided to upload images themselves they would at least be optimized in some fashion.
Its going to take awhile, but we’re excited to be working with Sprinity Productions Company. Stay tuned to see what we can do.
In the meantime, here is some of their video work for your enjoyment.
