As we are all aware of, from time to time, Google will update the way that it looks at websites. While Google doesn’t tell you the specifics of what they are looking for, they will give you a general idea of the coming change. This latest round of updates is no different.
In May, Google had completed the full roll out of their latest version of the mobile update. This update verifies that a webiste will work well on mobile devices such as phones and tablets.
From a technical perspective, this update is supposed to signal that a webiste is mobile ready, mobile friendly, and that the site should be ranked higher than other sites that may not be mobile friendly. If your site is already mobile compatible, there should be little to no change for you.
It’s worth noting that this latest update looks at your site on a page by page basis. If your front page is updated, but not other sections, then you might be penalized. If you’re uncertain about how your website measures up, ask us about a no-obligation audit. We’ll be able to identify if your site needs to be udpated so that it will comply with the latest updates, and if you like, we can also do the work.
You might have heard of the term “Mobilegeddon” last year. Some people in the SEO world have dubbed this “Mobilegeddon 2” but we think that’s a bit much. This is what we would consider a minor update, whereas the one last year was major.
In addition to having your site mobile friendly, what’s the last time that you checked your links? If you have links that don’t go anywhere (also known as “dead links”) your site may not be viewed as favorably as it should be. There are numerous tools and services available to do link checking, and is also a service that we offer.
Along with links, be sure that you have an updated Google + listing, and that it’s verified. Along with that, you should be sure that you have a LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and possibly Pintrest account. Did you know that more and more, Google, Yahoo and Bing are looking for social signals? Think about it – any real business is going to make sure that customers can find and interact with them – and social accounts are the “proof” of this.
Have questions or need help? Want to make sure that your company, business or brand can be found online? Give us a call to find out how we can help your business grow in 2016.
Looks like Google is planning another round of mobile updates that will affect rankings. If your site is not mobile friendly by now, its high time you get that fixed!
Inaccuracies and rumors are plentiful in the SEO space
One of the biggest misconceptions is this : “PDF pages are so SEO-unfriendly that you cannot rank them for any kind of halfway affordable keywords with them“. Some Search engine optimization professionals are still so set against the Portable Document Layout web pages that they do not feel they should even be landing pages. Some such Search engine optimizations advise changing all PDFs and HTML web pages or constructing added HTML landing pages targeting the very same keywords as the PDFs. The fact is: the most significant factor PDF pages frequently rank so terribly is that they are seldom effectively maximized. Don’t get me wrong.
In an overall SEO face-off, I would certainly still pick HTML over PDFs any day of the week, and you’re not likely to capture me developing all new web content for my customers in Adobe Acrobat. The real factor in 2016 is the user-experience. Many people are more comfy as well as HTML and experience much less cold and sluggish packing with HTML. It’s simpler to integrate interactivity as well as social functionality right into HTML web pages.
People likewise connect to HTML pages as well as share them a lot more frequently compared to PDFs(this is big). Why Utilize PDFs then? Don’t get me incorrect twice– there’s still needs to keep PDFs as SEO landing web pages. Below are a couple of usual usage situations: When you already have many PDF web pages on your website that individuals think about important. Prior to changing PDFs, be sure to examine to see if your PDFs have backlinks good engagement metrics, as well as great traffic.
When you have actually gorgeous PDF’s that would be very difficult to turn into an equivalently sexy and user-friendly HTML. When you have material that is indicated to be published or downloaded and install, like spec sheets, MSDSs, equipment handbooks, brochures, types meant to be published and loaded manually, and so on. When the cost-benefit ratio merely isn’t for changing PDFs. If you just have a couple of PDFs as well as you don’t desire to spend the upfront time or money transforming the pages right into HTML as well as rerouting the URLs, this may be the instance.
(That said, a good PDF-to-HTML converter could deserve the financial investment if you’ve obtained a great deal of un-uploaded PDFs laying around.).
Suggestions for using PDFs
The big misconception that search engines can’t digest PDF material operated with to be the instance years earlier, yet the search engines have actually come a long way, baby. So if you have reason to stick with your PDFs, merely comply with the straightforward considerations below.
I have actually detailed the important stuff first. Constantly make use of text-based PDFs. Internet search engine comprehend text way better compared to pictures (though the engines do have rudimentary optical character recognition capabilities), make sure the text in your document is selectable and can be copied and pasted, not pictures of words. A lot of the huge PDF developers, like those in Adobe Creative Collection, have your back here.
If you occur to have actually a scanned document you want to turn into a solid SEO landing web page, you’ll should utilize a little Optical Character Recognition yourself and transform the record right into content. Establish your title in the file residential properties. This is such an easy-to-fix and also common error that it drives me crazy. It remains however, that the title tag is a massive ranking factor. To do this to a PDF, one must establish the title in the document buildings.
Almost all PDF developers assist this capability consisting of Adobe applications such as InDesign. Per normal, you intend to smartly utilize key phrases and optimize your title tags. Set an SEO-friendly URL/filename. Generally, the PDF filename will certainly become part of the URL, so offer your document a good key-word rich filename. Typically, online search engine utilize the filename/URL snippet for the title tag when the title is not set.
Additionally, some file developers will fail the title as the filename. Take the time to develop a good, human readable filename. We’re getting a little burnt out on document titles like this: BEST SEO . What do keyword-rich title tags as well as descriptive URLs share, besides being PDF Search Engine Optimization ideal practices? They additionally adhere to typical SEO ideal practices. Follow your any other common standard SEO ideal techniques to maximize your PDFs also.
This consists of:
Internal Links to the PDF page to offer it some link juice and also authority (I see high-potential PDFs needlessly buried unfathomable in several sites). Mentioning inner linking and also usual pitfalls, please link from your PDF web page to your any other pages when pertinent. It helps your Search Engine Optimization efforts and the individual encounter, as well as it isn’t really done sufficient (seriously, I cringe when I have to replicate and paste an URL from a PDF right into the internet browser). good key words choice. key phrases in body duplicate.
Image Optimization (note: you can set alt text in many PDF tools). human optimizing (Friendly content is good SEO, buddy). Maintain the documents size light. Significant sized files will certainly fill slower, impacting individual encounter and also the online search engine’ crawl. Adobe has the “PDF Optimizer” function which will certainly enable you to minimize file size, as well as you’ll wish to use it for heavy PDFs. Learn the nitty-gritty on minimizing PDF report size here. Prevent replicate content.
Having both HTML and also PDF versions of the exact same material can in some cases be a sensible choice, but only if you take measures to avoid the duplicate content issue. Likewise, if you tweak a PDF and also re-upload it, do not produce a duplicate by inadvertently transforming the filename and also alter the LINK. Establish the other file properties as well. Hey, while you remain in there(setting the title)… you could as well finish the any other properties such as Writer, Subject, as well as Keywords.
I couldn’t honestly tell you how much effect this will have, but I keep continuing reading the authority blogs, that there is some merit to it I just wouldn’t spend all day on it. Some sources say the Subject will end up being the Meta Description (however I have yet to confirm this and much validity.). Touchup the Reading Order. “Touchup” the Reading Order and set alternative text along with headings. We have been using PDF Window as our go-to resource for PDF software and tips. We highly suggest giving them a look.
The headings are said to be taken care of by the search engines similarly to just how header tags are managing in plain HTML. Do not save as the most up to date Acrobat version. Numerous readers could not have the most recent Viewers variation (as well as no one wishes to upload it just for your silly web page). Online search engine sometimes fall behind the moments as well, so conserve your PDF in an older variation. Write-protect your file.
If you don’t write-protect your paper, then somebody can post the whole data to their site as well as transform it nevertheless they desire (consisting of modifying out your links.). —
Ok, ok. Look, PDF SEO ain’t too tough. Follow this checklist and you should see good success :
1)Always utilize text-based PDFs. Set your title in the paper buildings.
2)Establish an SEO-friendly URL/filename.
3)Do good Search Engine Optimization.
4) Maintain the data compression.
5) Prevent replicate material.
6)Establish the various other formats as well .
7) Touchup the Reading Order.
8)Do not save as the most up to date Acrobat version.
9)Write-protect your materials..
In a total Search Engine Optimization showdown, I ‘d still choose HTML over PDFs any day of the week, and you’re not most likely to catch me producing brand brand-new web content for my customers in Adobe Acrobat. People likewise link to HTML web pages as well as discuss them much more regularly than PDFs(this is large). What do keyword-rich title tags and also detailed URLs have in common, besides being PDF Search Engine Optimization ideal techniques? Talking of internal linking and common risks, please link from your PDF web page to your any other pages when pertinent.
Adobe has the “PDF Optimizer” function which will certainly permit you to lower report dimension, and you’ll want to use it for heavy PDFs. A big shout out to our friends at Blue Agave Soft for consulting on this article. Much appreciated fellas!
Keyword research is absolutely essential to the success of any website because keywords are what people use to find websites and are what search engines use as the basis for their rankings. Good keyword research increases the probability that search engines will rank the pages on your website high for your target keyword; and bad keyword research (which often means no keyword research) will doom your website to the search engine cellars.
Since search engine visibility is a key factor in attracting targeted search referral traffic, the higher you rank, the more traffic your website will receive. Clearly, keyword research pays off.
In order to ensure you get the most out of your keyword research – and, in so doing, increase the volume of targeted traffic to your website – make sure that the keywords your research identifies meet the following four key criteria (work through them in the order in which they appear):
Your keyword research time and effort must focus on identifying keywords that are relevant to your niche because relevance is critical to both search engine rankings and to the satisfaction of your end users (which, in turn, is obviously good for conversions).
If the overall theme of your website or blog focused on golf, you won’t be doing yourself any favours if you target keywords that are not related to golf.
2. Probability to Convert
Your keyword research time and effort needs to ensure that the keywords you target are used by people who are highly motivated to take some form of action:
- Click on a link
- Download a report
- Subscribe to a list or a fee
- Request more information
- Call or visit your business
- Buy something online
As a rule, research has found that “long-tail” keywords – keyword phrases that consist of two, three or more keywords – tend to lead to higher conversion rates. The reason is simple: long-tail keywords are more specific than single-word keywords and often reveal a “probability to convert.”
For example, a long-tail keyword phrase such as “download free keyword research software” is obviously more likely to lead to a conversion than a shorter keyword phrase such as “keyword research.”
So even though search volume for long-tail keywords/phrases is lower than for more general keywords/phrases, people using them in their search queries are generally motivated to take action.
3. Search Volume
Unless, for some reason, you don’t want or need an audience for your website or blog, your keyword research time and effort must focus on identifying keywords that have a satisfactory number of people using them in their search queries every month (what constitutes “a satisfactory number of people” is, of course, up to the individual and depends on his/her objectives).
To determine raw monthly search volumes for the keywords you’re researching, head on over to Google’s Keyword Selection Tool and do the following:
- Specify the country or territory you’re targeting
- Select a language
- Enter the keywords you’re researching
- Enter the Captcha
- Click on the “get keyword ideas” button
After Google serves up the initial results, you’ll want to narrow the keyword ideas by specifying “phrase match” for match type because it will produce a much more useful number – for our purposes – than the default “broad match.”
Eliminate any keywords whose “phrase match” search volume falls well below the “satisfactory number of people” your keyword research says you need.
The final criterion your keyword research must focus on is whether or not there is a reasonable probability that you can achieve a high ranking for the keywords you’re planning to target because the only way you’ll attract search referral traffic is if you rank at or near the top of the search results. Period.
While there are some fairly advanced ways to determine the “rankability” of the keywords you’re researching, in the interest of simplicity we’re going to go with a quick-and-dirty method that many people commonly rely upon: the number of other web pages that are “competing” for the same keywords that you’re researching. To do this,
- Navigate your browser to Google’s homepage
- Enter one of the keywords you’re researching into the query bar (make sure you do a “phrase match” search by enclosing the keyword in quotes)
- Click on the search button
If the total number of “competing” web pages – which will be displayed just below the query bar on the search results page – is less than 30,000, you’ve got a good chance of being able to capture a top ranking for the keyword for which you ran the search (it goes without saying that the lower the number of competing web pages, the better your chances are of achieving a top ranking for a particular keyword).
While this level of keyword research may require you to invest more time and effort than you’re used to, your investment will pay off in the form of consistently higher search engine rankings for popular keywords that are used by people who are generally more motivated than most to take some kind of action after their search leads them to your website.
Finding the best keyword research tool depends in part on what you intend to use if for. By this I mean are you generally using paid or unpaid marketing techniques? For example if you are using Google AdWords for your marketing strategy naturally you will be using the assortment of Google tools to set up your campaigns. This includes the Google Keyword Tool, the Traffic Estimator, The Adplanner and Google Editor. If you are using optimization or other unpaid strategies to develop your keywords there are a number of other tools which should be used to uncover the search and competition statistics of the keyword.
The Google Keyword tool is a good place to start regardless if you are using paid or unpaid traffic techniques. It provides a vast and totally free list of keywords with global search volume (the key metric to start with). From this list you want to develop keywords that adequately target your niche as well as offer modest competition for your selected strategy. For unpaid strategies such as optimization you want to examine the competitors for the top ten Google listings for each keyword. Will you be able to rank in the top ten for your selected keyword? This is the question you have to answer before you can choose a keyword to focus on.
One of the best keyword research tools for the optimization strategy is Traffic Travis. It has an excellent free version and easily gives you an assessment of the difficulty of ranking for a particular keyword. Now this is one of the new breed of tools, which includes Market Samurai and Keyword Elite among others that offer a complete exam of the potential competitor sites for your selected keyword. These tools zero in on backlinks, PR, and on page optimization to give you complete assessment of your prospects of getting onto the first page results. However, Traffic Travis, besides being free, removes most of the grunt work of assessing PR, searches and backlinks. It simply tells you, in the optimization module, if the search term is easy or hard to rank for. So it is a winner for ease of use.
Now for paid traffic you have a different set of tools in some cases. Many of these tools are free up to a point. The best keyword research tool for paid traffic is arguably Keyword Spy, with Spy fu a close second. Keyword Spy can give you stats on up to about fifteen words free and then you have to pay a subscription fee. However, the cost is worth it as you can peer into the campaigns of AdWords competitors for every paid keyword you choose. Keyword Elite is a relatively new program which is different than the others because there is no subscription fee, only a one time purchase. I find this very attractive for the new marketer. Keyword Elite generally pulls the same AdWords statistics as the others so you do not lose much in the analysis.
Finally SpyFu maybe the best keyword tool of all since it combines a broad array of statistics for both unpaid and paid traffic. It even has a very short term subscription plan, as does Wordtracker, so that you can use if for a day or two at less cost. Most of the tools mentioned have some degree of free options and you can do complete research using just that, even if you need to do more drilling into each keyword to get a complete list.
Keyword research is the art and science of finding the most highly profitable and highly targeted keywords that allow marketers to achieve higher rankings in the search engines. When conducting keyword research, there is a certain formula that you should use in order to find the best keywords for your niche or industry. In this article, I’m going to break down keywords into their most basic form and identify the 3 different types of search criteria.
Broad – Broad search results are the most common type of results when it comes to keyword research. Whenever you use a search engine like Google or Bing, and you type in a word or a phrase into the search bar, the results that you get back are ‘broad’ search results. These search results include any variation of a phrase or word. Broad search results will generate the largest number of results, but they are by far the least targeted results.
For instance, let’s use the term ‘tree’. If you type tree into the search bar, you will get every result with the word tree in it. It could be pine tree, cutting trees, I have a tree in my backyard, christmas tree, burnt tree, etc. There’s virtually countless variations of the word tree, and as you can see, they results aren’t targeted at all.
Phrase – Phrase search results are right in the middle. They can be pretty specific but they can be not targeted either. The main idea of phrase search results is that the words that are together must be stay together, no matter the search results. Since it’s a phrase, it would have to be at least two words for this to make sense.
For instance, lets use the term ‘cat toys’. As long as the phrase cat toys stays intact, there can be words before or after the phrase. You could have results like white cat toys, cat toys for sale, rubber cat toys, etc. I think you get the idea. You can see they are more targeted than the broad search results, but not as specific as the next search criteria.
Exact – Exact phrase results are exactly what they sound like… they have to be exactly matching the search term. If the term was ‘deep sea fishing equipment’, someone would have to type in deep sea fishing equipment for the exact search results to come back. As you can imagine, you get the least results this way, but you do get the most targeted search terms possible.
If you were entering a market or niche, it would be advisable to find the exact search phrases for your industry or niche and build your website or create your content around those words. Why, because it’s usually easier to achieve higher search engine rankings with these types of keywords versus any other types.
Google has just upgraded the AdWords External Keyword Tool so that it now also shows Search Volumes for the Keywords it returns during keyword research. As Google is the biggest source of keyword search phrases, due to the fact that it is the dominant search engine used by web surfers, this news is extremely significant.
Until now most internet and affiliate marketers will have used paid keyword research tools such as Wordtracker, Keyword Discovery, Wordze and Keyword Elite to find the keyword phrases that internet users are searching for. However these tools only gather information on a very small fraction of the actual searches performed. Google on the other hand has direct access to a massive number of real searches in comparison.
These paid keyword research services try and predict the total searches for each keyword by extrapolating their data, but the numbers returned cannot be considered accurate in any way at all. But because these tools were the only way to get any significant data they were relied on by many if not most internet marketers.
The Google AdWords external keyword tool has changed all this as it now displays key phrase search volumes that are not calculated, but which are taken directly from real search volume data gathered by Google from their own search engine. Now anyone performing keyword research can get all the data they need directly from Google, which will be much more accurate than that provided by the paid keyword research services.
The best part of this news is that Google now provides all this new information for free. Although the external keyword tool is provided for affiliate marketers using AdWords to promote products and services, it is available free to everyone. If you know the link URL then you can use this tool for free.
Many top internet marketers in the industry are claiming this as the biggest thing that has happened to internet marketing for a very long time. For once it seems that Google is giving something back. Of course there are also many cynics out there who question why Google has done this and there are others who question the accuracy of the search data Google has revealed. Early checks have shown that in may cases the data is fairly accurate, but only time will tell as more analysis on these new results is completed.
The other fact that is important to remember is that there is also a free version of this for each geographic country location, such as the UK or Australia, so keyword search volumes are now also available for country specific keyword research. So for UK keyword research, the Google external AdWords keyword tool is now the best keyword research software currently available.
This is extremely useful as the paid keyword research tools are not good at providing this localized information and remember again that it is free!

KEYWORD RESEARCH DO IT! !
With keyword research being a very popular topic in Internet marketing today, it seems that a new product is being produced and released every single month that claims to be the best solution since sliced bread. Now while there are some great programs out there that really can make keyword research easy to do, there are things within Google that will give you all the information you will ever need. Be advised that this method will take you more time than it would take with paid programs, but it can be done. So in this article, I’m going to give you some tips on how to use Google to find search criteria you need to analyze keywords for your business.
As you might know, there are 3 types of search criteria… broad, phrase and exact. Broad is the most common search result because whenever you type a term into Google, the results you get are ‘broad’ search results. When you look at the number of results being shown under the search bar, that number is the broad results number. In all honesty, looking at the broad search results number will not do anything for you in terms of keyword research. You’re going to have to use other methods like what I’m about to explain to you.
The next method Google is good for is finding phrase search results. The way you find the phrase results is by putting parenthesis around the search term. So if the term was dog training, you would type the phrase like this into Google… “dog training”. The number of results you would get back really gives you an idea of the level of competition for that particular keyword phrase. If you get results more than 50,000, then you probably have a keyword that has too much competition for you to actually rank for.
Now with Google, there’s no way to find exact search results, but there is one other thing you can do to help you with your research. You can use something called ‘allintitle’. Allintitle is a unique search by Google that only displays websites that contain the particular keyword in the title. This is another tool to rate your competition. If you find a keyword phrase that has less than 10,000 allintitle results, you have a very good chance of ranking for that keyword. To do an allintitle search, type in Google just like this… allintitle: your keyword.
When you do the methods I describe above, you’ll get a good idea of how well the keyword you’re looking at will do for you. What you’re missing out on is the number of daily searches a particular word would get, but lucky for you Google has another tool that can find that information out for you. Boy, isn’t Google nice?
Yeah Yeah, Here They Go Again on Keyword Reasearch
Writing and syndicating articles is a powerful way of broadcasting your message to a larger audience than you’d usually get on your website. A helpful article can be the turning point in convincing a new prospect to seek your advice, join your newsletter, or buy from you. By making good usage of the author resource box, writers can also create links to their website, feeding the search engines and improving their website’s ranking.
However, with over 10,000 articles posted per hour throughout the major article directories, how can you get yours to stand out from the masses? The answer is performing effective keyword research, so you feed the searchers exactly what they are looking for – and nobody else’s has supplied yet.
When researching for keywords, your best friend is Google search. No fancy softwares, no advanced techniques, no time wasted. Of course, you may want to go that route, and look for services such as Wordtracker, KeywordElite, or Spyfu, and those work beautifully, but I suggest an alternative route.
Since article marketing is a numbers strategy, meaning a single article will hardly make a difference, the less time you spend researching means you have more time to actually write.
So use Google search to determine first: a generic search, with millions of results. For example, lets say you’re selling drills, so you look up “best drills”. Write down what are the most repeated keywords on the top 10 pages.
Then, refine your search to be a little more specific, and include some of those keywords, for example: “best dewalt drills”, and you write down which terms repeated in this second search.
With these two simple searches, you’ve found an initial list that would relate directly to a drill-related search. But we’re going deeper, to guarantee exposure to your article. Research “best dewalt cordless drill” or “best dewalt drill for home use”. You should notice that those terms have random results, not specifically related to our keywords.
That’s when you’ve accomplished a successful keyword research for your article. Include those hot keywords on your article’s title and body, and submit it to one or two directories, changing 50-60% of the content before reposting, and you should see your articles right on the top results in about a week.
P.S – Article titles with statements are less powerful than those with questions. So, modify your keyword research to fit in a qualifying question, such as “Looking for the best Dewalt drill for home use?” Or “Do you know which Dewalt drill is best for home use?” Just make sure you answer the question on your first paragraph.

Google Page Rank
PageRank is a system for analyzing and comparing website links used by the Google search engine. A website’s Google PageRank (PR) is a numerical value from 1 to 10 which represents the quantity and quality of links pointing at it from other websites. Basically, Google is assigning a website a score out of 10 for its “link popularity”. No one outside of Google can explain precisely how PageRank is calculated, but it involves comparing a site’s inbound links, outbound links, and the in and outbound links of the sites it shares links with. PageRank (named after Google co-founder Larry Page), is one of several parts of Google’s search algorithm which determines what rises to the top of search query results. Websites with a higher PageRank score will often come up higher and more frequently in Google’s organic search results, though a high PR doesn’t necessarily mean high rankings – and it’s certainly possible to get to the top of the search results with a low PageRank.
The more high quality incoming links, the higher the PageRank number. For example, CNN.com has a PR of 10 and YouTube.com has a PR of 9. Every time someone’s blog links to a CNN news story, or a YouTube clip, it’s counted by Google as a positive “vote” for the site. Meaning it’s a positive affirmation that the website is valid and useful, and something Google would feel comfortable displaying as a search result. Hundreds of thousands of “votes” for CNN and YouTube earned them their high PR numbers. However, the biggest impact on a site’s PageRank score comes from links from other websites with high PR scores. So, a CNN or MSNBC (PR 8) story including a link to YouTube.com would have a bigger and more positive impact on YouTube’s page rank than hundreds (maybe even thousands) of links from low PR blogs. A link to a much more small time website, say, a small business with a PageRank of 4, from a big PR player like MSNBC would have the same big impact. Probably enough of an impact to increase the small business’s PageRank, while three dozen blog links may not even push it up by a hair.
If you have a website and are trying to increase the number of links pointing at it, PageRank is one of the things you should keep in mind when researching and networking. It’s certainly not the only factor to consider, but if all the links to your website are coming from websites with a PR of 1 or 2, you’ll find it hard to increase your own score. Many low quality links (like those from known Link Farms or Link Exchange programs) are filtered out by Google and not counted towards a site’s PR score. In fact, an over abundance of low or poor quality links can actually bring a website’s PageRank score down significantly. Quality far, far outweighs quantity within their page ranking system.
The easiest way to check a website’s PageRank is to install the Google Toolbar, which will display the PR of every site you visit. There are also a variety of online tools that will check a website’s page rank for you. A PageRank of zero usually means a website is fairly new and has not yet been fully evaluated, though it can mean the site in question is currently incurring some kind of penalty from Google and is being filtered out of search results.
All search engines use link popularity as part of their website ranking algorithms, but PageRank is exclusive to Google, so a high or low PR will have no effect on how well a website fares at Yahoo, Bing or any other search engine.

What’s that ? Can you repeat that? I didn’t heard you the 1st 5 times.
You have found a great niche and free domain. You immediately create a website with few pages, spend some time for search engine optimization and start promoting it. After some time you find that Google has indexed it but rankings for main keywords are poor. Even after few weeks there is no significant change. Your websites is positioned few hundred positions below the surface. You start wondering what might be the cause, is there maybe some conspiracy or too strong competition. Usually, the main cause for low ranking is the content itself.
Duplicate content is easily detectable. It is very likely that you have taken sentences or paragraphs from other pages to create your website. While the final product may look professional and nice to read, it is still duplicate content. Google checks pages from various points of view. One of them is the quality or uniqueness of the content. If some text is already present on other pages then there is no need to be duplicated somewhere else. And if such redundant pages are found then they are marked accordingly and this is reflected in poor ranking. The fact is that one of the strengths of Google web search is the quality of search results. When searching for anything you get relevant results. Content copied from other websites is definitely not relevant. Google knows it, now it is time that also you understand it and act accordingly.
Of course, there are also other reasons for poor ranking, but you should check and eliminate the most likely cause. To determine if your website has duplicate content is pretty easy. In general, you should know if the text on the pages is your work or you have taken it from other pages. However, there is a simple way to find any copied phrases, sentences or sections. Simply go to Copyscape website and enter url of the page you would like to check. If there is any similar content elsewhere on the web you will get those websites. Check them, any duplicate text will be clearly marked.
Once you find that you have some not-so-original content the solution is simple. You should write it with your words without using phrases or sentences from other sites. This means that you have to understand the subject and describe it with your own words. To know more about some subject simply Google for it, find relevant pages and read them. When you will have some understanding and knowledge you will be able to write about it. This is the basic principle of writing unique content.

It does not take an Online Search consultant to know about the on going issues with duplicate content. Everybody should be well aware that the major search engines love unique content. Search engine filters were brought into place by the major search engines and ever since it has become something of a harmful topic.
The problem arises when you do not understand what duplicate content is as it means more than an identical page on your site. I have been an Online Search consultant for 3 years and at least 30 percent of my clients have had issues with duplicate content so it seems not everyone is aware of the concept.
In its basic terms duplicate content means any page on or off your site that is identical or similar in content. It does not have to be identical as long as it is appreciably similar. There are harmful types of duplicate content and harmless. Harmless types of content include discussion forums, product pages and print only pages. The harmful types of duplicate content are those specifically designed to manipulate search engines and confuse indexing.
This is why big search engines such as Google hate duplicate content, they want to give you the most relevant content at the top of their SERPs, but which pages do they use if there are 100 pages that are identical or similar. It is for this reason filters are used, if your page is identical to another page either on your site or else where on the web, it will simply index the page with the most authority.
There are some simple things to avoid in order to prevent search engine penalties. Do not steal content, as well as an obvious Online Search effect you could also find yourself in trouble with copyright laws. Check for scrapers, these are people who are using content from your site to populate pages on their own. A good tool to use is copyscape. If you find anyone copying your content email the webmaster and ask them to remove it and also file a complaint with Google, Yahoo and MSN.
If you run more than one site based on a single theme ensure you create distinct content, this also applies if you have identical sites in different countries. If you run an affiliate site or online store, try to create unique reviews and product information, this will prevent your content becoming mingled with other product specs on the web
As an Online Search consultant duplicate content is one of the first things to consider when deciding the file structure of your site. If you follow the above advice and make a real effort to produce unique content you are very unlikely to be penalised by the major search engines.

It is a good thing that search engines detect plagiarism. I am not sure how they sort out various versions of articles or articles that quote other articles, but without some protection against plagiarism there would be very little incentive for originality in adding content to any website looking for optimization.
Websites that are found to plagiarize are penalized to one extent or another. Search engines try to discount plagiarized material – and this can result in drops in SERPs or even banning in some instances from search results.
To what extent the plagiarizing is very important. Websites where content is copied and pasted verbatim from one site to another are usually more apt to suffer the major problems in optimization. There is speculation that even partial plagiarism, where one paragraph or a few sentences are copied is seen by search engines as plagiarism. Considering that there may 400 variations of articles on some given topics, it’s a wonder that penalties for plagiarism aren’t even more prevalent. This means that you could inadvertently express an idea in the same succinct wording as someone else and receive a penalty.
From the standpoint of the search engine’s design, content is a major factor in a website’s success in optimization. Since millions of websites are adding content as fast as possible there is almost a certainty that plagiarism continues, in part created by a normal response to the search engine design.
Content writers need some guidelines to stay out of the penalty box. These are some guidelines – only rules of thumb, and certainly not a bottom line on all content contingencies:
Make sure all the people who write content for you use their own original articles as much as possible. Whether you are the sole writer or you hire a team of writers, this is the best practice. You should have your writers spot checked for originality, by yourself or one another.
When writing of completely unique material is not possible, then try these alternatives. This kind of situation may also be a part of submitting any particular content to multiple websites – and you do not want to be penalized.
Make absolutely sure that you create a real and different variation from the original for each of the websites that you will submit to. It is best to rewrite, reword, rephrase each sentence. You should at least use synonyms, vary verb tenses, reorder sentence structure if possible.
You can and should alter any sequencing in lists or time related events or outlining generally – as the meaning of your content may permit. You can even merge or subdivide paragraphs. Using a smaller synopsized version of the original can also help when secondary submissions or uses do not demand a full or exhaustive version. You can shift viewpoints, change to a questioning rather than exclamatory voice, use humorous or poetic characters in your language, etc.
Another way to check whether your content resembles or matches other content is to visit a spell checker website. One of these is named Article checker and is found at http://www.articlechecker.com/ This
is one more way to avoid penalty. There are some other articles for this at:
